Tips for Posing Groomsmen in Your Wedding Photography

We love seeing our Groomsmen all dressed up and excited for their best friend on his big day! These photos can be a lot of fun for the wedding photographer with a good combination of serious poses and just flat out silliness. Here are a few ideas, from a Northern UT photographer, on how to get your groomsmen to pose on the wedding day.

  1. The Bouquet Groom Toss

One of my favorite poses of the day is the Groom toss. Be sure to guide your Groomsmen to coordinate the toss together on the count of three and to set them up for success and safety.

To make your groom toss unique, instead of taking the photos straight on, you can take it from the side and direct the groom to look over at you and smile/strike a pose at the top of the toss.

If you are really daring, you can lay down underneath the toss to get the height! This works best when you are tossing the groom on his stomach to get his facial reaction.

2. The Standard Group Shots

For standard posing, you can direct the groomsmen to turn in toward the groom and place their front hand in their pocket OR…

…having their hands clasped in the front is also a standard Groomsmen pose.

3. The Horseshoe Pose

Have your groomsmen stand in a horseshoe shape so that the foreground groomsmen are blurred and the groom is most in focus.

Tip: For natural smiles at each other, encourage the groomsmen to slap each other on the back!

4. The Big Silly

Read the room, and if you’ve got a group of silly ones be sure to showcase their personality. Get the bride involved, too!

Tip: Be sure to do some silly posing on the individual shots as well (of just the groom and one groomsmen at a time).

My favorite silly pose is the boy band shot!

5. Don’t forget the boutonniere!

Don’t forget to capture the boutonniere while taking the groomsmen shots, because trust me, after dancing later on these will get ruined.
