Tips for an Epic Maternity Session!

Giving birth is such a miraculous part of life! About a year ago I got the opportunity to photograph a live birth session and it was the most amazing thing I’ve EVER SEEN!

Here’s how to document the whole process and honor these soon-to-be mamas through a gorgeous maternity session!

  1. Choosing Your Location

Location is super important when thinking about Maternity! Generally, you want a flatter location that doesn’t cause strenuous hiking to get there, and a spot that still has an epic view!

I always like to chose spots where it’s a park and view, meaning the view is right next to the parking lot.

2. Posing

I like to capture both shots with the partners as well as solo shots of the mother. Since posing can be limited due to circumstances, I like to change up my shots with the distance I’m shooting from my subjects. Meaning I’ll shoot close to the pregnant tummy with their hands touching her belly, OR I’ll do a faraway shot of the mom-to-be with an epic view in the background.

Make sure the mother’s hands are holding down the material of her outfit so that material doesn’t bunch over her tummy. This way you are able to tell in the photos that she is pregnant.

3. Props

To change it up, bring items like…

  • Baby Shoes

  • Jumper

  • Sonogram

  • Customized items with the baby’s name on it, so on

4. When to Take your Maternity Pictures?

28 to 36 weeks

I have had friends who didn’t feel like taking photos during their maternity due to discomfort or they didn’t like the way they looked. Afterwards though, they always regretted not having them.

If your mom-to-be is asking if she should get them or not, I always try to bring up what an amazing moment is happening right now, and lovingly try to encourage her to document this time!

I personally love the tenderness maternity photos bring and love shooting them! Hope you enjoyed these tips!
