Owning your very own Backyard Shipping Container Photography Studio

I used to watch HGTV yard renovations and dreamed of having my very own backyard office, piano studio, and photography studio. Until December of 2021 where I decided to make my dreams a reality… AND YOU CAN, TOO! Here’s how to get your very own backyard shipping container studio!

Alternative Living Spaces

Alternative Living Spaces is a Vegas company that specializes in building and designing tiny homes, shipping container offices, and pools. I chose to work with them because they were near Salt Lake City, had an eye for design, and were reviewed highly/great to work with.

Design

When designing your container studio, be aware of placement of outlets (especially if you are making yours a photography studio - you don’t want to have to edit out an outlet from your backdrop wall every shoot. So just be cognizant of these and the AC/heater unit when designing your space.

You can work with Alternative Living Spaces to decide where you want your windows placed, the staircase to the roof, so on, so that you get precisely what you want.

Also, let them know if you live in an area with a lot of snow so that they can do extra measures to water proof the windows, create drip covers, and protect the roof from rust, so on.

Steps to Getting Your Backyard Container

  1. Purchase the container of your choice - via wire transfer of funds

  2. Build a Cement Pad - We found a local company to pour a cement pad to the dimensions we wanted for our shipping container space.

  3. Hook up electricity - They have to dig a trench, and run wires out to the back.

  4. Ship the Container - The company will drive the container to your home where you will have a crane ready upon arrival to drop the container where you want it.

  5. Have the Crane Ready - We hired someone local with a crane to drop the container onto our pad and move the stairs where they needed to go.

  6. Enjoy!

My Experience

I have used my backyard shipping container studio as a backyard piano and photography studio for the past 4 years and LOVED having it! The rooftop is perfect for looking at the mountain behind our house or for watching fireworks on the 4th of July!

Here are some of the shoots that have taken place in it over the years!
