Moving to a new state or expanding your photography business to a new location can feel both exciting and daunting. We have first hand experience, when we went from being solely Utah wedding and elopement photo/video team, to opening up our business in Texas, as well. There are fresh opportunities, new landscapes, and untapped markets with moving, but on the other hand, you're starting from scratch when it comes to building your client base, which can feel like a lot! But don’t worry, with the right approach and some strategic planning, you can start attracting clients in no time.

Here are some practical tips for photographers looking to acquire clients in a new state and make a successful transition.

1. Leverage Your Existing Network

Even though you’re moving to a new state, don’t leave your current clients behind. Reach out to your existing client base to let them know about your move. If they know anyone in your new state, they can provide valuable referrals. You can also ask them to follow you on social media, where they can share your posts with their networks.

Additionally, ask your former clients if they would be willing to leave you a review or testimonial. These can be used on your website, social media, and other marketing materials to build trust with potential clients in your new location.

2. Optimize Your Website and SEO for Your New Location

Make sure your website reflects your new location. Update your contact information, address, and any other details related to your photography business. You should also incorporate SEO strategies for the new state or city. Use keywords like “photographer in [city/state]” on your website, blog, and social media profiles. This will make it easier for locals to find you when searching online for photographers in the area.

In addition, consider adding location-specific landing pages to your website. For example, if you’re targeting specific areas within the state (like specific cities or towns or national and state parks), create landing pages for each that are tailored to those locations. You can even market these landing pages on Google Ads.

3. Partner with Local Vendors and Businesses

A great way to build a client base is by establishing partnerships with local businesses, especially those in the wedding, event, and hospitality industries. Reach out to wedding planners, venues, florists, caterers, makeup artists, and other service providers to introduce yourself. You can collaborate on styled shoots, offer cross-promotions, or even set up a referral program.

By working together, you can tap into their existing client base and gain exposure to a group of people who are already interested in photography services. Plus, these local vendors can give you a trusted recommendation when clients ask for photographer recommendations.

You can also attend or host stylized shoots with other photographers and get on each other’s associate shooter lists. That way they can refer you if there is ever a shoot they are unavailable for.

4. Network, Network, Network

When moving to a new state, networking is key. Attend local events, business meetups, photography walks, and networking mixers where you can introduce yourself and your business to others. If you're focusing on weddings, consider attending bridal shows, or even hosting your own stylized shoot. Networking isn’t just about making connections, it’s about building relationships. The more you engage with people in your community, the more likely they are to think of you when they need a photographer.

In addition to in-person events, be active on local Facebook groups, community forums, and Instagram hashtags specific to your new location. Engage with locals, contribute helpful advice, and show off your work.

5. Offer Special Promotions for New Clients

When moving to a new state, offering special deals or discounts can attract potential clients and incentivize them to book your services. A “New State, New Deals” promotion or a discounted “Welcome Package” can pique interest and get people to try your services. Just be sure that your promotional pricing doesn’t undervalue your work—rather, use it as a way to get people in the door so you can wow them with your talent and customer service.

Remember to always set a deadline for your promotion, whether it’s tied to a season, event, or calendar date. This creates urgency and encourages people to act quickly.

6. Get Active on Social Media

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Youtube and other social platforms are perfect for photographers, but they’re also invaluable tools for acquiring new clients in a new state. Make sure you are showcasing your work and using local hashtags. Tag local businesses and locations when relevant. By sharing images from your new area, you show potential clients that you’re familiar with the environment and can create beautiful work tailored to their specific surroundings.

Engage with people who comment on your posts. Social media is one of the most powerful ways to market your photography business in your new state, so make sure you’re actively participating.

7. Consider Paid Advertising

If you’re looking to scale quickly, consider investing in paid advertising on platforms like Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram. These ads allow you to specifically target people in your new state or city. You can run campaigns to promote specific services (weddings, portraits, family shoots, etc.) or simply raise awareness of your new location.

When setting up ads, ensure your messaging is tailored to your new audience and highlights your unique value proposition. It might be beneficial to offer a limited-time deal or free consultation as part of your ad to generate interest and capture leads.

8. Attend Local Events and Give Back

If you want to become known in your new state, being active in the community is essential. Attend local charity events, fundraisers, or public gatherings. You could also volunteer your services for a cause that’s close to your heart. Giving back to the community not only feels good, but it also positions you as someone who genuinely cares about the place you now call home.

You can also host your own local events, like mini-sessions or workshops. This is a great way to introduce your services to the local population and start building relationships with potential clients in a fun, low-pressure environment.

9. Ask for Reviews and Referrals

Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to acquire clients. After completing a session, kindly ask your satisfied clients to leave you a review or refer you to their friends and family. Make sure you provide excellent service, as the better the experience, the more likely your clients will spread the word.

For online reviews, platforms like Google, Facebook, Yelp, and WeddingWire (for wedding photographers) are great places to ask for testimonials.

10. Be Patient and Stay Consistent

Building a client base in a new state won’t happen overnight, and that’s okay! It’s important to stay patient, be proactive ahead of your move. keep a positive mindset, and stay consistent with your marketing efforts. The more time and energy you invest in your new community, the more recognition and clients you will gain over time.

Moving to a new state and establishing yourself as a photographer can be challenging, but with the right approach, you’ll soon be capturing memories and making connections in your new home. By leveraging your existing network, optimizing your online presence, networking locally, and offering value to potential clients, you’ll be on your way to building a thriving photography business in your new location.

Stay consistent, keep pushing forward, and remember—your new state is full of opportunities just waiting for you to seize!
